Float Like a Wasp, Hit Like a Scorpid

All hunters, once you hit level 80 should make getting to the soft Hit Rating cap a priority. Hit will give you better bang for your DPS (Damage Per Second) than other stats until you get to the soft cap. A lot of hunters do not know what Hit Rating they really need. Blizzard also does not help by showing a percentage in our Armory Profiles, but using raw numbers within the game.

The website WoW Heroes has a nice and simple hit rating calculator. I used it to gather the information needed for this article.

Hit Rating for all Hunters with no talent points spent in Focus Aim except Draenei:
262.32 or 8%

Hit Rating for Draenei Hunters with no talent points spent in Focus Aim:
229.53 or 7%

Hit Rating for all Hunters with 1 talent point spent in Focus Aim except Draenei:
229.53 or 7%

Hit Rating for Draenei Hunters with 1 talent point spent in Focus Aim:
196.74 or 6%

Hit Rating for all Hunters with 2 talent point spent in Focus Aim except Draenei:
196.74 or 6%

Hit Rating for Draenei Hunters with 2 talent points spent in Focus Aim:
163.95 or 5%

Hit Rating for all Hunters with 3 talent point spent in Focus Aim except Draenei:
163.95 or 5%

Hit Rating for Draenei Hunters with 3 talent points spent in Focus Aim:
131.16 or 4%

Lets be clear that I am looking at this from a standalone perspective. Yes, in the raiding environment, you will and can get buffs that can make up for Hit Rating shortcomings. Some players plan around that scenario. Food and an elixir buff can also make up for a lack of Hit Rating.

Draenei do not need as much Hit Rating from gear, gemming, and enchanting due to their Heroic Presence racial. Said racial gives all Draenei 1% hit, and that 1% spreads to anyone they party with for the time the party is together.

It is better to be a little over your soft cap Hit Rating than it is to be under. There is another Hit Cap which is the Spell Hit Cap. It’s not quite as important for us in my opinion. Enjoy getting to the Hit Cap and knock some bosses out.

This information applies to the here and now. You can expect this to change with the next expansion Cataclysm.
